Based in New York City, violist Celia Hatton has performed across North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Her playing has been praised for its "rich, robust" sound by The Michigan Daily and lauded as "superb" by the Santa Barbara Independent. Hatton is Principal Viola of Sphinx Virtuosi, Co-Principal of Chamber Orchestra of New York, and a member of A Far Cry. As Principal Viola of Experiential Orchestra, her solos can be heard on the GRAMMY-winning album The Prison. She has also performed with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and has toured with ECCO, The Knights, and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.
Hatton has premiered string quartets by Colin Matthews, Derek Bermel, and Felix Jarrar and has appeared with distinguished ensembles such as the Blair String Quartet, Harlem Quartet, Manhattan Chamber Players, and North Country Chamber Players. As an Honorary Ambassador, she has performed throughout South Korea with the New York in Chuncheon Festival.
Beyond classical music, Hatton has performed at iconic venues like the Apollo Theatre and Jazz at Lincoln Center in collaboration with Paquito D'Rivera, and at Smalls Jazz Club, The Blue Note, and Birdland Jazz Club. Her diverse collaborations include recording on Mark Gross’s jazz album + Strings, BIGYUKI's electronic album Reaching for Chiron, and Terry Slingbaum’s Slingbaum One. She has also worked with dancers in performances at Jacob’s Pillow and Little Island’s Music and Dance Festival. Hatton’s work can be heard on the film scores of Joker (2019), Judas and the Black Messiah, I, Tonya, and West Side Story (2021), among others.
In addition to her performance career, Hatton is an Adjunct Professor at Adelphi University and has given masterclasses at institutions including Colburn Music Academy, Manhattan School of Music, New York University, and Vanderbilt University.
Hatton earned her Bachelor’s Degree from New England Conservatory, where she studied with Kim Kashkashian and received a Presidential Distinction Award Scholarship. She went on to earn both her Master’s Degree and Professional Studies Certificate from Manhattan School of Music, studying with Karen Dreyfus.
